본 강좌는 오늘날 전 지구적 자본주의의 역사적 발전 과정을 이해할 수 있는 주요 역사적 사건들을 살펴본다. 동시에 경제적 인간(homo eonomicus)과 ‘유럽중심주의’라는 두 가정을 비판적으로 살펴보고 이를 통해 서양 경제사를 ‘경제’의 독자적인 발전과정이 아닌 당대 정치문화 속에서 살펴볼 수 있는 가능성을 모색한다.
20세기 후반 주류 경제사는 수요와 공급 혹은 합리적 인간과 같은 경제학의 기본 전제들을 토대로 경제 성장을 살펴보고 있다. 하지만 이러한 ‘경제주의’는 경제를 정치·문화 등과 같은 사회의 다른 영역들로부터 ‘독립된’ 것으로 구성하는 문제점을 안고 있다. 또한 19세기 산업혁명과 제국주의를 거치면서 전 세계적인 지배력을 확보하게 된 ‘서양’의 지리적이고 시기적으로 ‘특수한’ 사례를 보편적인 것으로 가정하는 ‘유럽중심주의’에 매몰되어 버렸다. 본 강좌는 두 가지 ‘주의’를 극복하려는 ‘신정치경제(New Political Economy)’와 ‘자본주의의 역사(history of capitalism)’과 같은 최근 역사학의 접근법들을 소개하여 대안적인 서양 경제사 읽기를 시도하고 경제를 사회 속으로 되돌릴 수 있는 가능성을 모색한다.

20세기 국제금융사를 전공했고, 최근에는 ‘민주주의와 금융’이라는 주제 하에 남북한을 포함한 권위주의 정권과 국제금융과의 관계를 연구하고 있다. 최근에는 신자유주의의 역사 만들기를 포함하여 한국과 미국에서 신자유주의 정책이 구체적으로 실천되어온 사례들을 살펴보고 있다.
